Jeremy
lays under the Christmas tree at the house, surrounded by the gifts he bought
for Raine weeks ago. At the time he bought them, things weren't going all that
great between them, but Jeremy had hope that things would get better. He always
had hoped that things would get better. But then they didn't get better. They
just kept on getting worse and he couldn't take it anymore. He couldn't stand
to keep on hurting and worse than that, to keep on hurting Raine.
His eyes
fill with tears. The lights turn into a fuzzy blur above him. They remind him
of what he thinks the universe must look like from above. And that reminds him
of a time when he and Raine got along and had all these great conversations all
the time. What happened to that? Jeremy is sure that he knows. It's all his
fault for pushing too hard. In this moment, Jeremy hates himself for wanting
too much. For wanting things that Raine couldn't give. Jeremy feels like he's
destroyed Raine and that makes him hate himself even more.
The hate
builds inside him until he cries out with it and swipes at one of the
ornaments, sending it flying across the room. He cries hard and wishes that
things were different. He wishes that he were different. But he knows that
wishing is pointless now. It's over. It's really over and he has to learn to
accept that he was the one to pull the plug. He's the one that ended it. He's
the one that ended the relationship with the love of his life. His heart feels
crushed by the weight of it all.
He gets
up and goes into the bedroom to grab some more of his things. When he's done
packing, he comes back out by the tree. His hands shake as he reaches up to
take off the talisman. He hangs it up on one of the branches of the tree. It's
no good around his neck. He's tainted everything it stood for. He stares at it
for a moment, then turns to walk out the door, back to his parents' house.
